Verne W. Livengood, Crawfordsville's oldest banker, who had been in the banking business 62 years died at 2:35 p.m. Saturday at Culver Hospital.  He was taken to the hospital March 15 after becoming ill at his home, 418 W. Main St. One of Indiana's oldest bankers, Mr. Livengood began his banking career in 1892 with the Waynetown State Bank.  He came to Crawfordsville in March of 1922 after having been associated with the Waynetown Bank 30 years.  Mr. Livengood retired from the banking business last Jan 1 after having been associated with Crawfordsville financial institutions 32 years.  DUring this period he had served as cashier and president of the Citizens National Bank and as vice president of the Elston Bnak & Turst Co. He had served as vice president of the Elston Bank since the merger of the Citizens National and Elston in 1952.  A leader in church and civic affairs as well as in banking circles, Mr. Livengood was chairman of .... and the official board of the First Christian Church 15 years.  He also was a teacher of the Everyman's Bible class of the church for several years.

Other affiliations included the Montgomery Masonic Lodge, Athens Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Knights of Pythias Lodge and the Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club of which he was a pst president. He also was a past worthy patron of Athens Chapter. Mr. Livengood was a graduate of the Waynetown HS and Indianapolis Business College.  He began his banking career after graduating from the business school.  

Born Aug 7, 1872 south of Waynetown where he spent his boyhood, Mr. Livengood was the son of Thomas I. and Martha Lucinda Young Livengood. He married Mary G. Groves Oct 10, 1900 at Waynetown.  Surviving are the widow, a son, Harry S. Livengood, proprietor of the Men's Shop in Greencastle; a grandson, Harry W. Livengood of Gary, a brother, Guy V. Livengood of Waynetown and a sister, Mrs. William Parker of Crawfordsville.  He was preceded in death y a sister, Mrs. Grace Parker of Waynetown and two half-sisters, Mrs. Emma Stockdale, also of Waynetown and Mrs. Mary Williamson of New Castle. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church with burial at the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. The Rev. Paul E. Million will be the officiaitng minister.
